Description

This Bentley S2 Continental 2 door coupé was purchased by the current owner in 2019 from The Real Car Company. He had a very specific plan in mind, in that he wanted to use the car and not just look at it.

Over the next three years, he undertook a rolling refurbishment with Hillier Hill in order to allow him to use the car to tour throughout the UK and Europe. This included: the Bentley Drivers Club New Zealand Rally in 2023; two rallies to Italy and numerous rallies in France. The owner confirmed the car performed faultlessly throughout all rallies. In the three year period between purchase and New Zealand, the owner undertook significant works on the car to get it up to his standards for usage.

This included brake, steering and suspension work. Cooling system work, electrical work, gearbox overhauled by Graham Whitehouse, a rebuilt rear axle and half shafts, propshaft replacement, plus myriad other improvements as well as general servicing: all work carried out by Hillier Hill.

The car is finished in Regal Red with gold fine lines. The interior is finished in Black leather with black carpets. The interior trim is an older restoration as is the wood, predating the ownership of our client.

Circumstances dictate that he is not able to use the car for rallies for the present time. Consequently, he has reluctantly decided to put the car up for sale. During his five years of ownership he has spent in excess of £70,000.00 getting the car as he wanted it. The important thing about the car, is that is not a car to just be looked at. It is well sorted, well looked after and usable proposition for a new owner to use and enjoy and put their own stamp on it as they wish.

The asking price for the car is £230,000.00

Model History

Unveiled in 1959, the Bentley S2 marked a significant evolution in the marque’s post-war development. At its core was the all-new 6.2-litre aluminium Rolls-Royce–Bentley L Series V8, replacing the long-serving straight-six from the S1. Paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox and benefitting from upgrades to the steering, braking, and cooling systems, the S2 offered a smoother, more refined grand touring experience.

The S2 Continental was the high-performance derivative, aimed at owner-drivers rather than those who preferred to be chauffeured. Supplied exclusively as a rolling chassis to a select group of coachbuilders (most notably H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward, and James Young) it was offered in elegant, low-volume two-door coupé and drophead coupé forms, each handbuilt to the buyer’s specification.

Of these, H.J. Mulliner was both the most prolific and arguably the most admired. Their two-door fixed-head coupé design, with its clean lines and subtle proportions, embodied the understated sporting luxury that defined the Continental series.

Between 1959 and 1962, just 388 S2 Continentals were produced, a number that ensures their continued rarity and desirability. The Mulliner-bodied cars in particular are revered not only for their elegance but also for their usability, lighter and more agile than the standard saloon, and capable of covering long distances with poise and comfort.

Today, the Bentley S2 Continental by H.J. Mulliner remains one of the most sought-after coachbuilt Bentleys of the post-war era, a harmonious blend of craftsmanship, performance, and discreet prestige.
