The barn question

Bedfordshire is farming country, and that means there is no shortage of informal storage. Somebody always knows somebody with a spare barn, and the rate is usually a fraction of what a proper facility charges. It is worth being straight about why we cost more, because for some cars the barn is genuinely the right answer.

A barn is dry in the sense that rain does not land on the car. It is not dry in the sense that matters. Unheated agricultural buildings track outdoor humidity almost exactly, which means the car goes through the same daily condensation cycle it would outside, minus the rain. Add dust, agricultural chemicals in the air, and rodents, which find car interiors and wiring looms extremely attractive over winter, and the saving starts to look different.

Then there is the insurance position. Most specialist classic policies ask where the car is kept overnight, and the answer affects both the premium and, in the event of a claim, whether the policy responds at all. A shared agricultural building with no alarm and no controlled access is not the same declaration as a monitored indoor facility.

What we are

We are a family-run business operating four discreet rural sites in North Bucks, fifteen minutes apart, with capacity for over 150 vehicles. We do not publish the addresses and visits are strictly by prior appointment. For cars of this value, discretion is part of the service rather than an obstacle to it.

Cars are stored indoors and dehumidified, kept on trickle charge where appropriate, and checked regularly. Detailing, MOT and servicing can be arranged before you collect, so the car is ready to drive rather than ready to recommission.

When the barn is fine

If the car is a running project worth a few thousand, and it is coming apart over the winter anyway, a barn is a perfectly sensible place for it. We would rather tell you that than take the storage fee.

The cars that come to us from Bedford tend to be the ones where the sums no longer work that way: finished restorations, appreciating classics, and cars that are insured for a figure that makes the annual storage cost look like a rounding error.
